Cesspool Companies in Nassau County

Much of Nassau has been on sewers for decades, but not all of it. Large parts of the North Shore still run on cesspools, and a full one backs up just as it does anywhere else.

Cesspool, side viewA cesspool is a precast ring with open sides and no tank in front of it. Heavy waste stays in the ring while the liquid seeps into the sand around it.

If you grew up in Levittown or Valley Stream, a cesspool might sound like something from the past. Drive to Glen Cove, Roslyn or Oyster Bay and you are back in cesspool country. Coastal Wastewater Solutions and the county’s Soil and Water Conservation District, in a 2022 conference paper, counted about forty thousand onsite systems on the North Shore, an area they found almost entirely without sewers.

Two kinds of Nassau neighborhoods

Where public sewers run, the county Department of Health requires every home and business to hook up, and whatever cesspool or tank was there before has to be closed under county rules. Where they do not, the system in the yard is the owner’s to pump, repair and eventually replace. The sewer or cesspool guide shows how to find out which kind of street you live on.

When a cesspool overflows

For questions or complaints about sewage or an overflowing cesspool, leaching pool or septic tank, the county points residents to the Health Department’s Community Sanitation Program at 516-227-9715. Commercial systems with a design flow of 1,000 gallons a day or more need engineering plans approved by the department’s Bureau of Environmental Engineering, at 516-227-9692.

Licensing works differently here

Suffolk issues a dedicated liquid waste license; we found no Nassau equivalent. Here, cesspool companies fall under the county’s home improvement licensing. Search any company below on the Nassau license lookup before you hire.

County money for an upgrade

Nassau will reimburse up to $20,000 toward a nitrogen-reducing system that replaces a cesspool, for eligible homes, small businesses and nonprofits without a sewer connection. Our Nassau grant guide covers who qualifies and the paperwork.

The companies below are based in Nassau. Some Suffolk companies list Nassau towns in their service areas too, Antorino and Sons in Huntington among them, so check the Suffolk list if you are near the county line.

The county's online sewer service lookup and the Health Department's list of districts by community will tell you, and the local sewer authority can confirm a single address. Our sewer or cesspool guide walks through both.

Who do I call about a cesspool overflowing next door?

The Nassau County Department of Health's Community Sanitation Program, at 516-227-9715, weekdays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For emergencies after hours and on weekends, the department lists (516) 742-6154.

What license should a Nassau cesspool company have?

A home improvement license from the county's Office of Consumer Affairs, which counts cesspool work among its licensed trades. Our license guide shows how to search for one.

Does Nassau pay toward replacing a cesspool?

Yes. The SEPTIC program reimburses up to $20,000 toward an approved nitrogen-reducing system on an unsewered property. The Nassau grant guide has the rules and steps.
