Cesspool Pumping on Long Island

Outside the sewer districts, a lot of Long Island houses send every toilet, shower and wash load into a precast concrete ring in the yard. That ring has to be emptied by truck every few years, and the prices below are what local companies post for it.

Cesspool, side viewA cesspool is a precast ring with open sides and no tank in front of it. Heavy waste stays in the ring while the liquid seeps into the sand around it.

The downstairs toilet takes a second longer to clear. The shower drain gurgles while the dishwasher runs, and on warm evenings there is a smell by the side of the house. Sewertech in Medford lists the early signs as slow drains in every sink and toilet, gurgling pipes, a sewage smell outside, unusually green or soggy grass over the cover, and water backing into the tub when someone flushes.

A pump-out is the fix for a cesspool that is simply full. A truck with a vacuum tank pulls out the liquid and the solids that have settled in the bottom of the ring.

Five Long Island companies post prices online, and their ranges do not line up.

Antorino and Sons says most cesspools hold 1,000 to 1,500 gallons, which is why the middle of Jet’s table is where most houses land.

Charges that get added on site

The base price assumes the truck can park close and the cover is easy to open. When it is not, the bill grows.

  • A buried cover. Rapid Response says a buried lid has to be found and uncovered first, which adds time. Long Island Sewer and Water Main puts machine digging at $300 to $1,200 on top of the pump-out; hand digging costs less.
  • After hours. Long Island Sewer and Water Main says an after-hours emergency can run about double the routine rate, and that emergency service can pass $1,000. Antorino and Sons puts emergency pumping at 3 to 4 times a scheduled visit.
  • Washing out the ring. Sometimes included, sometimes $50 to $150 extra, per Long Island Sewer and Water Main.

A riser that brings the cover up to the lawn ends the digging charge for good. Ask about one if your cover sits a foot or more down.

How often Long Island cesspools get pumped

Rapid Response says most Long Island households pump every 1 to 3 years, and a family of four in a three-bedroom house is often on about a two-year cycle. Antorino and Sons breaks it down further:

HouseholdAntorino and Sons’ suggested interval
One personEvery 3 to 4 years
Smaller householdAbout every 3 years
Family of fourEvery 1 to 2 years
House with a garbage disposalPossibly every year

Sewertech is more relaxed, saying most homes should pump every 3 to 5 years. With advice that far apart, write down the date and the gallons removed after every pump-out and let your own record set the schedule.

What happens on pumping day

Sewertech describes six steps: check the ring for damage, sludge level and access; open the cover and position the truck; vacuum out the solids and liquid; rinse out leftover sludge; look the ring over again; then haul the waste to a licensed treatment facility.

Antorino and Sons adds that a good visit ends with paperwork: how much was removed, a disposal receipt and a note on the condition of the system. Keep it with your house papers. If you ever sell, the buyer may ask for it.

The county rules behind the truck

In Suffolk, pumping a cesspool is licensed work. Chapter 563 of the Suffolk County Code makes it unlawful to run a septic industry business without a license, and anyone pumping, servicing or cleaning a cesspool needs the septic tank pumping, cleaning and maintenance endorsement on that license. Since July 1, 2018, companies have also had to report pumpings to the county health department, according to The East Hampton Star’s coverage of the 2017 law.

In Nassau, the Office of Consumer Affairs lists “cesspool builders and cleaners” among the trades it licenses as home improvement contractors.

In both counties, ask for the license number and look it up yourself. Our guide to checking a cesspool company walks through both county searches.

Questions for the company on the phone

  • Is the price for my cesspool’s size, or a starting price?
  • What do you charge if the cover is buried, and do you install risers?
  • Is rinsing the ring included?
  • Is there a disposal fee or a travel charge?
  • What is the after-hours rate if this turns into an emergency?
  • Will I get a written record of the gallons removed and what you saw?
  • Is my cesspool precast concrete, or older brick or block? In 2013 the Long Island Liquid Waste Association told 27east that block cesspools can cave in once they are pumped out, because nothing is left pressing outward on the walls.

Warning signs in a quote

  • A price given before they ask anything. Size and cover depth drive the bill, so a number given blind will change on site.
  • No license number. In Suffolk, pumping without one is unlawful under Chapter 563.
  • A replacement pitch with nothing to show you. If a ring has failed, a good company can point to what they saw. Get a second opinion before you sign for a new system.

Booked with a pump-out

  • Septic or cesspool inspection

The EPA says a household system should be inspected at least every three years, and on pumping day the cover is already off.

  • Sewer line repair

If the house still backs up right after a pump-out, the blockage may be in the pipe instead. Long Island Sewer and Water Main lists a camera inspection of the line at $175 to $350 (Sep 2026).

  • New system or replacement

Suffolk stopped allowing a worn-out cesspool to be swapped for another plain cesspool in July 2019. A replacement needs at least a septic tank in front of the leaching pool.

Pump-out questions

How much does it cost to pump a cesspool on Long Island?

Sewertech in Medford puts a standard residential pump-out at $350 to $650 (Oct 2026). Jet Cesspool Service in Holbrook prices by size, from $225 to $400 for 1,000 gallons up to $400 to $700 for 1,750 gallons (Jun 2026). Antorino and Sons in Huntington lists $400 to $700.

Is cesspool cleaning the same thing as pumping?

Usually it is the same visit. Sewertech's process ends with rinsing the ring to clear leftover sludge. Long Island Sewer and Water Main in Sayville prices pressure washing and solids removal as an add-on of $50 to $150 on top of the pump-out (Aug 2026), so ask whether it is included.

How long does a cesspool pump-out take?

Sewertech says most pumping jobs take 1 to 2 hours, depending on the size and how easy the cover is to reach.

The cesspool was just pumped and it is backing up again. Now what?

Antorino and Sons reads standing water or wet spots near the cesspool as an overloaded system that needs emergency service, and says sewage backing into the house means calling someone right away. If the ring itself has failed, a replacement is the next conversation; see septic system installation.
